Birdland in Bourton-on-the-Water

Birdland Park and Gardens - Bourton-on-the-Water

Birdland was first established in 1957 and was sited in the centre of Bourton on the Water.

The current location was a trout farm and prior to that a Poplar Tree plantation. There are still over 150 trees which create a high canopy for the River Windrush and enclosure.

Spring Update 2008

The Blue Magpie chicks have just left their nest and are being protected by their very vocal parents.

In the Toucan House you can see the newly hatched trio of Crowned Plovers.

The Trumpeter Hornbills have just gone to nest, but they make things a little more complicated than some other species of bird. The female has been mudded into the nestbox, with only a small slit left at the entrance so the male can feed her. If she lays eggs and rears the chicks she could be inside the box for 90 days. Watch this space.

The Caribbean Flamingos have also gone to nest for the first time and they are sitting an egg on their nest mound - the Greater Flamingos will be nesting soon.

We have just finished the decking at the front of the Penguin Cafe to make the surroundings a lot more comfortable for our visitors.

We are also tidying up the entrance with new signage etc. which is enhanced with the hanging baskets and glorious Wisteria.

Bionic Bird at Birdland
A Southern Groud Hornbill resident at Birdland in Bourton on the Water has had a broken section of his beak replaced with a stainless steel section after part of its lower bill was broken.

The bird is thought to be one of only 12 in Britain and may have starved without its bionic beak
