West Oxfordshire District Council waste and recycling services
4th January 2010
Waste and recycling collections in some areas of West Oxfordshire are behind schedule due to the continuing icy road conditions. Some collections have been suspended for the safety of our bin men, and residents and their property.
Please could residents whose waste has not been collected, leave their bins and recycling boxes out.
Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for the Environment said “We are trying our utmost to reach as many areas as possible but what with the revised collection dates, to allow for the festive Bank Holidays, and the continuing icy weather we have fallen a bit behind schedule.
“However, our collection crews are working extra hours to get back on schedule, but this will remain dependent on the road conditions”.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the plastic sacks for recycling over the festive period. These have been delivered to all homes in West Oxfordshire and can be used for one recyclable material only - either paper or cardboard or plastic or metal - but not glass.
Extra sacks are also available from:
* The Council’s Town Centre Shops in Chipping Norton and Witney
* Council’s offices in Woodgreen and New Yatt Road, Witney
* Carterton Town Council
In addition to the above, excess waste can be taken to:
* Waste and recycling centres (council tips) in Dix Pit, Stanton Harcourt and Dean Pit, Chadlington.
* Recycling banks are located throughout the district. Further information, including any updates on waste and recycling collections, can be found online at www.westoxon.gov.uk
Chipping Norton to get new multi-use games area
3rd October 2008
Work will soon commence on a new £90,000 Multi-Use Games Area and sheltered seating area in Chipping Norton.
The MUGA will be built at the Worcester Road Recreation Ground for young people to play several sports, including basketball, football and tennis. A shelter will be built nearby for them to meet up with friends and watch people playing sports. New equipment will also be installed at the recreation ground’s existing play area for younger children.
West Oxfordshire District Council, which secured funding from the Big Lottery Fund for the project, has now chosen the contractors and work will begin in the near future. It is hoped that the MUGA and shelter will be ready for use by the end of the year.
The project is costing £90,000 - £50,000 from the Big Lottery Fund, £20,000 from Chipping Norton Town Council and £20,000 of partnership funding from the District Council.
Cllr Hilary Biles, the District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Health, said: “This scheme shows the support and commitment the Council has for leisure facilities in the district. This will be of great benefit to young people in Chipping Norton and surrounding areas.”
Chipping Norton Town Council is responsible for the recreation ground and has been involved in the project.
The Mayor of Chipping Norton, Cllr Martin Jarratt, said: “We are all very pleased to have got to this stage with this project. It’s going to be of great benefit to young people. We do appreciate that this is a starting point and that there is still work to do, but it is very good to be doing something for the youth of the town.”
Known locally as 'Chippy', the bustling market town of Chipping Norton is the highest town in Oxfordshire at approximately 700ft above sea level.
