The Romans in the Cotswolds

Chedworth is one of the best sites in the country for anyone wishing to explore and understand the remains of a large country house of the Roman period.

On a site on the edge of Cirencester town you will find the earthwork remains of one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in Britain, built in the early 2nd century, and be able to view one of their famous underground heating systems (hypocausts).

At North Leigh Roman Villa, near Witney, you will find the remains of a large, wellbuilt Roman courtyard villa.

Chedworth Roman Villa is very much an interactive attraction, with many events being staged so that your experience of the site is enhanced and your understanding of the Roman way of life improved. The villa was discovered by accident in 1864, when a gamekeeper found fragments of paving and pottery on the bank of soild which covered what is now referred to as room 32.

In Cirencester you can visit the earthwork remains of one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in Britain, built in the early 2nd century. It served the Roman city of Corinium (now Cirencester), then second only in size and importance to London, and had a capacity of around 8,000 spectators. Later fortified against Saxon invaders.

At North Leigh Roman Villa, near Witney, you will find the remains of a large, wellbuilt Roman courtyard villa. The most important feature is a nearly complete mosaic tile floor, patterned in reds and browns.

Help! The Romans are coming!
