Many people ask, 'what is the best month to visit the Cotswolds?'
One of the loveliest times to visit the Cotswolds is from March through to May. The beautiful Fauna and Flora of the lush hills arguably makes this one of the most scenic places in the UK. Spring flowers start with the first show of snowdrops in early spring at Painswick Rococo Garden. Soon gardens all over the Cotswolds start bursting into life. With warmer days together with the reliable and beautiful daffodils and bluebells make a pleasing arrival at almost every turn.
Nature reserves and parks in the Cotswolds
Gloucestershire Wildlife Nature Reserves offer lovely walks for bluebell spotting. Batsford Arboretum becomes awash with colour from the daffodils and snowdrops showing off in the sun.
Historic Woodchester Park is another 'must' to visit on your Cotswold day trip. In 2015 the remains of a terraced garden was discovered on the Estate and with funding from the National Environment Trust and the Linley Shaw Foundation a project began to reveal the gardens to the public.
Commons and fields
The splendour without doubt is in the rolling hills which is evident in the region around Edge and with wildflowers and grasses that cover the fields on Minchinhampton and Rodborough. Again daffodils abound with wild garlic and the beautiful cherry and apple blossom all presenting a beautiful landscape.
As often seen in the country fields, May is usually the birthing season for cows and horses. I have been very excited on my many walks on the Common to see the little foals and calves and see the delight the children display at such an event.
Return to normal
This year as the UK slowly unlocks from months of the 3rd lockdown people are particularly enthusiastic to travel locally and once again enjoy this wonder of nature and beauty.
Some of the most popular attractions remain Gloucester Cathedral and the bustling market town of Cirencester (referred to as the Capital of the Cotswolds).
Added to the list there are magnificent churches proudly dominating in their respective areas. I am also reminded of the Churches in Painswick, Tetbury and Woodchester.
Stroud is now the new favourite 'kid on the block' from recent positive media coverage. There are several villages and towns in the Cotswolds widely promoted as places of interest and beauty.
Canals and their associated barges also add to the charm of the area. Sporting activities and Cotswold walking trails will see the return of people eager to enjoy the outdoors once again and all that the outdoors offer.
Café scene
The brighter and longer days that Spring and Summer provide add a colourful and cheery atmosphere to the outdoor café scene provided by restaurants and pubs taking the 1st steps towards returning to life as we knew it. A friend of mine in South Africa mentioned to me how she loves the colourful flowering baskets that are found so prolifically in the UK. A joy that is frequently seen at the entrance of pubs, cafes and homes in Cotswold villages.
Gloucester Quays shopping has seen the return of their former 'buzz and vibe' along with the return of the highly popular and well supported Orchard Square monthly markets as well as the re-opening of pavement cafes and bars.
With restrictions on international travel still in place, the Cotswolds is the perfect staycation destination.
