Why is Bourton-on-the-Water famous?

Bourton in the water is well-known as 'the Venice of the Cotswolds' due to the five low footbridges (some can also be used by vehicles) which cross the River Windrush as it flows alongide Bourton's High Street. The bridges are believed to date between 1654 and 1911.
