Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire
Stow-on-the-Wold, or Stow, is one of the most visited Cotswold towns and is home to a fine selection of shops, hotels and eateries. Stow on the Wold stands exposed on a 800 feet high hill on the ancient Roman Fosse Way that leads to the Midlands. Like many of its Cotswolds neighbours, Stow was at the centre of the Cotswolds wool trade.

Visit Stow's famous 'Hobbit Door'
Marvel at St. Edwards Church and its magical yew tree framed doorway (known as 'the Hobbit door').
Looking like a portal to another realm, local legend says that says J. R. R. Tolkien visited the Church and the entrance inspired his Doors of Durin (also known as the West-gate, the West-door of Moria, or Elven Door) in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Although we cannot find any evidence to support this claim, its studded wooden panels flanked by ancient yew trees certainly look like this door is something born of Middle Earth!
And Tolkien studied English Literature at Oxford university, not a million miles from Stow, so it could well be true!
Grab a bite to eat at one of the many tea rooms and eateries or explore the many antiques shops in the town. Fans of the outdoors can visit nearby Hidcote Manor, Bourton House and Snowshill Manor.
